Slovakia's oldest national park protecting the alpine heart of the Carpathians

Tatra National Park

Tatra National Park stands as Slovakia's premier protected area and the nation's oldest national park, established in 1949 to preserve the unique alpine ecosystems of the Tatra Mountains. The park spans the Slovak portions of the Tatra range, which forms a natural border with Poland to the north and represents the highest and most dramatic mountain landscape in Slovakia. The terrain encompasses three main mountain groups: the Western Tatras, the High Tatras, and the Belianske Tatras, each offering distinct geological and ecological characteristics. The park's elevation ranges from 710 meters at its lowest points to 2,655 meters at Gerlachovský štít, creating dramatic ecological gradients from forested valleys through subalpine zones to bare alpine peaks. This vertical complexity, combined with the region's position at the crossroads of various European climatic and biogeographic influences, has produced an extraordinary concentration of endemic species found nowhere else on Earth.
