Privacy at a glance
- No accounts, sign-ups, or forms. You can use the whole atlas without telling us who you are.
- Cookieless analytics. We measure visits with Umami on our own servers, without cookies and without storing IP addresses.
- Ads by Google AdSense. Google may use cookies or similar identifiers to show and measure ads.
- Preferences stay in your browser. Recently viewed parks and your temperature unit are stored on your device, not on our servers.
- No sale of personal data. We do not sell or rent visitor data to anyone.
- Pinterest publishing is planned, not active. It will only post our own content to the Mori Atlas Pinterest account.
Who we are and what this policy covers
Mori Atlas (www.moriatlas.com) is a geography-first atlas of national parks and protected areas. This privacy policy explains what information is processed when you visit the website in any language, why it is processed, which service providers help us, how long data is kept, and which choices and rights you have.
Mori Atlas is responsible for the processing described in this policy. You can contact us about any privacy question at [email protected].
This policy does not cover external websites we link to, such as Wikipedia, UNESCO, or official park websites. Their own privacy policies apply when you visit them.
Data processed when you browse
Mori Atlas has no user accounts, sign-up, comments, newsletter, or contact forms. We never ask for your name, postal address, or payment details.
Like every website, we process some technical information to deliver pages to your browser and keep the service secure:
- Connection data: your IP address, the date and time of the request, the page or file requested, and the response status.
- Browser data: your browser type and version, operating system, preferred language, and the referring page, as sent by your browser.
- Search and map requests: when you search for parks, filter results, or move a map, your search terms and the visible map area are sent to our server so it can return matching results. They are not linked to your identity.
We use this information only to show you the requested content, keep the atlas fast and available, detect and prevent abuse, and fix errors.
Privacy-friendly analytics
To understand which parks, countries, and maps are most useful, we use Umami, an open-source analytics tool that we host on our own servers. Umami does not use cookies and does not store your IP address.
For each page view, Umami records:
- the page address and title, and the website that referred you;
- your screen size and browser language;
- your browser, operating system, device type, and approximate location (country, region, and city), derived from the request at the time of the visit;
- page performance measurements, such as how quickly the page loaded and responded to input.
Visits are grouped with an anonymous identifier calculated from technical request data and a value that changes every month, so visits cannot be linked across months. Analytics data is used only by Mori Atlas to produce statistics. It is never shared with advertisers or sold.
You can stop analytics from loading by using a content or tracker blocker in your browser.
Advertising by Google AdSense
Mori Atlas is free to use and is financed by advertising provided by Google AdSense. When a page loads, your browser connects to Google's servers. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies, device identifiers, and similar technologies to:
- show ads and limit how often you see the same ad;
- measure ad performance and detect invalid or fraudulent activity;
- show personalized ads based on your visits to this and other websites, where this is permitted.
Google processes this data under its own responsibility and policies. Learn more about how Google uses information from sites that use its services and how Google uses cookies in advertising.
You can turn off personalized ads from Google in My Ad Center and opt out of personalized ads from many other providers at aboutads.info or youronlinechoices.eu.
Maps and images
Interactive maps are drawn in your browser. To display them, your browser loads map data directly from external map providers, which receive your IP address and browser information as part of each request:
- OpenFreeMap provides the base map tiles and styles for park, climate, boundary, and world maps.
- OpenStreetMap tile servers provide the map tiles for earthquake epicenter maps.
Park photos, posters, and country flags are stored with our file storage provider, Sevalla. Most images are delivered through our own servers, but some small images, such as country flags, are loaded by your browser directly from Sevalla.
Emails you send us
If you email [email protected], we receive your email address, your name if your email program includes it, your message, and any attachments. We use this information only to reply and to handle any follow-up. Our mailbox is hosted by Purelymail.
Service providers
We work with a small number of providers to run Mori Atlas. Each one receives only the data it needs for its role:
| Provider | Role | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare | Content delivery, caching, DNS, and protection against attacks | Connection and browser data for every request |
| Hetzner Online GmbH, Germany | Servers for the website, database, analytics, and technical logs | Connection data, analytics data, and technical logs |
| Advertising through Google AdSense | Connection data, cookies, and device identifiers | |
| Sevalla | Image and file storage | Connection data when images load directly |
| OpenFreeMap | Map tiles and styles | Connection data when maps load |
| OpenStreetMap Foundation | Map tiles for earthquake maps | Connection data when these maps load |
| Purelymail | Hosting for our support mailbox | Emails you send us |
Some providers, such as Cloudflare and Google, may process data outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States. In those cases they rely on safeguards recognized under data protection law, such as the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
We do not sell, rent, or trade personal data.
Planned Pinterest integration
Planned feature, not active yet. This section describes how data will be handled once the integration launches. Mori Atlas does not currently connect to Pinterest.
We plan to use a Pinterest developer application, Mori Atlas Publisher, to share Mori Atlas content, such as park pages, maps, and images, as Pins on the Mori Atlas Pinterest account.
- Our account only: the app will only be connected to Pinterest accounts owned by Mori Atlas. Visitors will not be asked to sign in with Pinterest or connect their accounts.
- Authorization data: when we authorize the app, Pinterest issues access and refresh tokens for our account. We will store these tokens securely on our servers, use them only to create and manage our own boards and Pins and to view their performance statistics, and never share or sell them.
- Revoking access: we will delete the tokens when we disconnect the app. Access can also be revoked at any time in Pinterest's account settings.
- No visitor data: the integration will not send any information about Mori Atlas visitors to Pinterest.
When you view or interact with our Pins on Pinterest, Pinterest's privacy policy applies. We will update this policy before the integration goes live if any of these practices change.
Legal bases
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we rely on the following legal bases under the GDPR:
- Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR): delivering and securing the website, keeping technical logs, cookieless analytics, loading map data and images, and answering your emails.
- Consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR): advertising cookies and similar technologies used by Google, where the law requires consent. You can withdraw your consent at any time with effect for the future.
How long data is kept
- Technical server logs: kept for up to 30 days. Logs that record errors are kept for up to 12 months so we can investigate recurring problems.
- Analytics data: kept without IP addresses or cookies for as long as it helps us understand long-term usage trends.
- Emails: kept as long as needed to answer your request and handle any follow-up, and deleted when no longer needed.
- Browser storage: stays on your device until you clear it. Session storage is removed when you close the tab.
- Third-party providers: Cloudflare, Google, and the map providers keep data according to their own retention policies.
Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you and receive a copy;
- correct inaccurate data;
- have your data deleted;
- restrict or object to processing, including processing based on legitimate interests;
- receive your data in a portable format;
- withdraw consent at any time, without affecting processing that took place before.
To exercise these rights, email [email protected]. Because Mori Atlas has no accounts and stores analytics without IP addresses or cookies, we usually cannot link browsing data to a specific person, but we will help wherever we can.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, in particular in the country where you live or work.
Children
Mori Atlas is a general-audience reference website and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes and contact
We update this policy when our features, providers, or legal requirements change, for example before the planned Pinterest integration launches. The date at the top of this page shows when the policy was last updated.
