Alykos Potamos - Agios Sozomenos

Alykos Potamos - Agios Sozomenos is a small protected area in the interior of Cyprus, designated under the European Natura 2000 network as both a Site of Community Importance and a Special Protection Area for birds. The site covers around 372 hectares of entirely terrestrial habitat in the Mediterranean ecoregion, centered near 35.05°N, 33.4°E. The protected area combines a wetland-influenced river valley with surrounding dry Mediterranean vegetation, including saline marshes, Mediterranean salt meadows, halophytic scrub, arborescent matorral with Ziziphus, thermo-Mediterranean shrubland, Sarcopoterium phrygana, pseudo-steppe grasslands, and fragments of southern riparious gallery vegetation along the Alykos Potamos stream system. Its conservation value rests primarily on its importance for breeding and migratory birds, with 54 protected bird species associated with the site, alongside a smaller set of protected mammals, reptiles and plants such as the endemic-leaning Ophrys kotschyi orchid and the Western Caspian turtle Mauremys rivulata.
