Ebenhöhe-Liebenberg

Ebenhöhe-Liebenberg is a small nature reserve in the Werra-Meißner-Kreis of northern Hesse, Germany, covering the wooded hills of Ebenhöhe and Liebenberg northwest of the village of Werleshausen, near the Werra river and the border with Thuringia. The reserve protects a varied mosaic of semi-natural deciduous woodland, dry and semi-dry limestone grasslands, sandstone rock communities, wet tall-herb patches along the Siesterbach, and small traditional orchards that together support many rare and threatened species. The area has been a designated nature reserve since 1995 and was incorporated into the European Natura 2000 network as a Fauna-Flora-Habitat site in 2008. Its particular value lies in the combination of orchid-rich calcareous beech forest on the south-facing slopes, nutrient-poor grassland communities shaped by former agricultural use, and the pockets of sandstone cliff vegetation on the upper rocks. Together with the surrounding Werra valley landscape protection area, the reserve forms one of the more species-rich low-mountain conservation sites in the eastern part of the Hessian highlands.
