Endeavour River National Park

Endeavour River National Park is a coastal protected area in far north Queensland, Australia, situated at the mouth of the Endeavour River immediately north of Cooktown. The park encompasses approximately 21.7 square kilometres of diverse coastal and wetland ecosystems including coastal dunes, freshwater wetlands, mangrove forests, heathlands, tropical woodlands, and the river estuary. Established in its current form in 2006, the park protects both outstanding natural values and significant cultural heritage connected to Captain James Cook's historic 1770 voyage along the Australian coast. The area holds particular importance as the site where early European naturalists Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander first collected specimens of Australian flora, and where the kangaroo received its English name from the local Guugu Yimithirr language.
