Gimmlitztal Nature Reserve

Gimmlitztal is a designated nature reserve in the German state of Saxony, located in the eastern Ore Mountains (Osterzgebirge) along the valley of the Gimmlitz stream. Established in 2015, the reserve covers roughly 258 hectares and straddles two districts: Mittelsachsen and Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge. The protected area extends around the town of Frauenstein, enclosing a mix of valley forests, stream-side meadows, and culturally influenced landscape features shaped by centuries of small-scale mining and limestone processing. The reserve preserves a transitional landscape between the densely settled lower Ore Mountains and the more elevated, forested ridges near the Czech border. It includes the surrounding slopes of the Gimmlitz valley and connects with earlier, smaller protected meadows that were already under conservation in the 1970s. Today Gimmlitztal functions as an important local refuge for habitat continuity between forests, brooks, and traditional grassland communities. The protected corridor is valued for its ecological diversity as well as for its scenic character. It preserves the hydrological and biological integrity of the Gimmlitz stream system and offers a connective green ribbon through an otherwise heavily modified mountain landscape.
