About Himmelmoor

Himmelmoor is a former raised bog in the district of Pinneberg, Schleswig-Holstein, situated mainly in and around the town of Quickborn. Once a continuous peatland of roughly 600 hectares, it supported centuries of human activity centered on peat cutting, agriculture, and forestry, before modern conservation priorities shifted attention toward restoration and rewetting. Historically, the landscape was shaped from about 1780 onward, when the edges of the bog were divided into parcels and allocated to farmers from nearby villages for small-scale peat extraction. In the 1870s, the industrial era of the Himmelmoor began, with mechanized cutting concentrated in the core of the bog. For much of the twentieth century, peat harvesting continued using convict labor, prisoners of war, and eventually mechanical equipment. The practice finally ended in 2018, earlier than the timeline originally foreseen under a 1919 contract. This long history of extraction left a deeply altered landscape of drained sections, cut-over peat fields, and fragmented habitats. In recent decades, however, Himmelmoor has increasingly been viewed as a site for ecological recovery. Rewetting has been carried out in the northern sections, and the character of the central bog is gradually shifting back from drained, birch-dominated secondary woodland toward open moor vegetation. The site's national conservation importance was underscored in 2022 when its core area was upgraded from landscape protection to full nature reserve status. Himmelmoor history and protected-area timeline

The history of human use of the Himmelmoor reaches back to around 1780, when the edges of the bog were divided into parcels of roughly 1,000 to 5,000 square meters and assigned to farmers from neighboring communities such as Bilsen, Borstel-Hohenraden, Hemdingen, Quickborn, and Renzel for peat cutting. These small-scale operations gradually gave way to industrial extraction, which began in the 1870s with the introduction of machinery in the center of the bog. Forced and punitive labor left a difficult chapter in the moor's history. From 1915, Strafgefangene, or convicts, from the central prison in Rendsburg were sent to work in the peat fields. During the Second World War, the site also held a prisoner-of-war camp in which French and Soviet prisoners, along with political detainees, were exploited as forced laborers for peat extraction. Within that camp stood a separate accommodation for at least 53 Jewish prisoners, organized as the Kriegsgefangenen-Arbeitskommando 1416. The building in which they were housed still stands, largely unchanged, with a small commemorative plaque at its entrance. Between the wars and into the 1980s, peat continued to be cut by inmates of the Neumünster prison under open prison conditions. Mechanical extraction of white peat began in 1960 and continued for decades until peat harvesting ended for good in 2018. That closure came earlier than originally planned: a contract dating from 1919 had effectively obliged extraction to continue until the bog was exhausted, but conservation priorities overrode the legal arrangement. In December 2005, the Förderverein Himmelmoor was founded to coordinate care measures with the local nature conservation authority, support research on climate and biodiversity, and educate visitors about the bog through a moor learning trail and a peat museum. In February 2015, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Torfbahn Himmelmoor e. V. was created by enthusiasts of narrow-gauge railways, and it now preserves and operates the historic peat railway, while also carrying out habitat management work such as the removal of invasive shrubs.

The Himmelmoor is a lowland raised bog landscape, characterized by a flat, waterlogged terrain that was historically shaped by centuries of peat accumulation. After long periods of drainage and peat cutting, the surface today is a mosaic of rewetted cut-over areas, remnant bog vegetation, drained sections, and regrowing birch woodland. Much of the original surface has been replaced by industrial peat fields with characteristic straight edges, drainage ditches, and exposed peat faces. Around the edges, where peat cutting was historically less intensive, more natural bog features remain, including open peat moss cushions, hollows and hummocks, and fragments of bog woodland. Viewing platforms allow visitors to look out across these contrasting sections, which visibly differ in color, vegetation, and moisture. The wider landscape includes the neighboring Kummerfelder Gehege, an area of acidic beech forest that contrasts sharply with the open bog, as well as the Bilsbek lowland, a wetter transitional zone that links the bog to surrounding farmland and settlements. Together, these areas form a varied mosaic of woodland, open moor, and wet grassland.

Himmelmoor ecosystems, habitats, and plant life

Himmelmoor and its surrounding area host a diverse mix of wetland, bog, woodland, and grassland habitats. The bog itself supports typical raised bog vegetation, including Sphagnum mosses, cotton grasses, bog sedges, and, on the most intact surfaces, sundews, the carnivorous plants that thrive in nutrient-poor peatlands. In the southeast, small bog woodland fragments survive, while in the center and on abandoned cut-over areas, a secondary woodland of moor birch has developed on the drained peat. The neighboring Kummerfelder Gehege adds a strongly contrasting habitat of acidic beech forest. Here, the ground flora includes woodrushes, hair grass, blueberries, melic grasses, woodland mercury, and yellow archangel, with ash trees on wetter ground and birch-oak woodland on poorer soils. The Bilsbek lowland contributes marshy and wet meadow vegetation along the small watercourse. Rewetting has begun to reverse the hydrological conditions on parts of the former cutting surface, gradually shifting the vegetation back from dry birch woodland toward wetter, more open bog communities. This makes Himmelmoor an important reference site for observing how raised bog vegetation can recover when water levels are restored.

Reptiles and amphibians are also present, with snakes such as the smooth snake and the common European adder, and amphibians such as the natterjack toad and various frog species using the wetter parts of the landscape.
