Jagsttal Dörzbach-Krautheim

Jagsttal Dörzbach-Krautheim is a designated European Natura 2000 site in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany, stretching across parts of the Hohenlohekreis and Main-Tauber-Kreis. The protected area follows the Jagst river and its side streams through a landscape of steep limestone slopes, softwood and hardwood forests, broad meadows, and rocky outcrops. It was proposed by the Stuttgart regional council under the European Habitats Directive in 2005 and formally designated as a Site of Community Importance in late 2018, entering into legal force on 11 January 2019. The site is notable for combining unusually intact river habitat with a striking mosaic of dry and wet environments. South-facing slopes support orchid-rich calcareous grasslands, pioneer communities on limestone scree, and open rock vegetation, while north-facing slopes and the plateau above are dominated by extensive broadleaf woodland. Nine caves, including the rock-shelters and caves associated with St. Wendel zum Stein, add a karst-related dimension to the site's character and complement the riparian and forest habitats. Beyond its immediate landscape features, Jagsttal Dörzbach-Krautheim plays a role in the broader European network of protected areas by safeguarding habitat types and species that depend on near-natural river systems, traditional calcareous grasslands, and mature deciduous forest. Together with neighboring Jagst valley sites such as Jagsttal bei Schöntal und Klosterwald and Jagsttal Langenburg-Mulfingen, it forms part of a continuous corridor of conservation value along the Jagst.
