Moravian Karst

The Moravian Karst represents the Czech Republic's most significant karst landscape and stands as a geological monument of European importance. The region showcases the complete spectrum of karst formations except for poljes, with sinkholes, caves, underground rivers, and karst valleys creating a complex and visually striking terrain. The limestone bedrock, dating to the Devonian period, has been carved by chemical dissolution into an elaborate network of passages and chambers that rank among the most extensive in Central Europe. The protected landscape area encompasses not only the dramatic underground world but also the surface terrain of forested limestone ridges, karst valleys, and the characteristic red-earth terra rosa soils. The area supports a rich diversity of habitats and serves as an important ecological corridor within the Czech landscape. Tourist infrastructure includes well-maintained hiking and cycling trails that traverse the gorges and connect the various cave entrances, while the region also offers climbing opportunities on the rocky cliffs of Pustý žleb and Suchý žleb.
