A limestone gorge where the Warta River cuts through the Częstochowa Upland

Przełom Warty koło Mstowa

Przełom Warty koło Mstowa is a roughly twelve-kilometer river gorge carved by the Warta through the northern edge of the Częstochowa Upland in southern Poland. The gorge forms a natural boundary between the Częstochowa and Wieluń Uplands, with the breakthrough section itself belonging to the Częstochowa Upland. It is one of the largest erosional incisions on the entire Kraków-Częstochowa Upland and is widely recognized as a distinctive geological and landscape feature of the region. The area combines dramatic limestone rock outcrops, river cliffs, oxbow lakes, and a mosaic of meadows, forests, and farmland. A portion of the gorge is formally protected as the Natura 2000 site Przełom Warty koło Mstowa, covering about one hundred hectares between the Mirów district of Częstochowa and the rural commune of Mstów. The gorge also lies at the northern fringes of the Orlich Gniazd Landscape Park, integrating its conservation value with a broader protected landscape. Beyond its geological interest, the area offers a dense network of hiking trails, the Wieluń Jura Trail, kayaking routes along the Warta, and nearby cultural landmarks including a medieval monastery at Mstów and the Sanctuary of Saint Padre Pio on Przeprośna Górka. Together these qualities make the gorge both an important natural area and a popular regional recreation corridor.
