Rheinniederung Neuburg-Wörth

The Rheinniederung Neuburg-Wörth is a Fauna-Flora-Habitat area in the southern Upper Rhine region of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, covering about 14.5 square kilometers of river floodplain between the communities of Wörth am Rhein, Hagenbach, Neuburg am Rhein and Berg. The protected landscape stretches along the eastern bank of the Rhine, combining old Rhine meanders, oxbow lakes, ponds, reed belts, wet meadows and floodplain forests into one of the most ecologically diverse lowland areas in the federal state. What makes the area distinctive is the tight intertwining of aquatic, amphibious and terrestrial habitats within a relatively short section of the Rhine floodplain. Floating leaf vegetation, large reedbeds and tall sedges line the old river arms, while softwood and hardwood floodplain forests, dry grasslands and species-rich meadows occupy the slightly higher ground. The Wörther Altrhein is especially notable as the only oxbow water body in the Rhineland-Palatinate Upper Rhine where water caltrop, fringed water-lily and European water nymph grow together. On the European level the area is part of the Natura 2000 network and has been recognized for several Annex II species, including the northern crested newt, migratory fish such as allis shad and sea lamprey, and rare butterflies like the dusky large blue. Beyond its conservation role, the Rheinniederung Neuburg-Wörth is also a cultural landscape shaped by centuries of floodplain use, traditional grassland management and the neighboring French border along the Lauter river.
