Sławice Duchowne

Sławice Duchowne is a very small protected habitat site in southern Poland, designated as a Site of Community Importance within the European Union's Natura 2000 network. It is situated on the Miechów Upland (Wyżyna Miechowska) in the Małopolska region, within Gmina Miechów, at a location that forms part of the village of Sławice Szlacheckie. The protected area covers just 4.41 hectares, but despite its tiny footprint it safeguards an ecologically significant patch of xerothermic grassland classified as the Inuletum ensifoliae habitat, a dry, sun-loving, steppe-like plant community listed under Annex I of the EU Habitats Directive. The site is valued for its concentration of protected and rare wildflowers typical of warm, dry grassland habitats. More broadly, Sławice Duchowne is a representative example of the Miechów Upland's heritage of preserved xerothermic swards, which harbor relict and endangered plant species that would not otherwise survive in the modern Polish agricultural landscape. As part of Poland's Natura 2000 network, it contributes to the conservation of European dry-grassland biodiversity in a region where such habitats have become increasingly fragmented.
