Swatte Poele

Swatte Poele is a small nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the northern German state of Lower Saxony, located in the municipality of Bippen within the Samtgemeinde Fürstenau in the Osnabrück district. Established as a protected area on 1 August 1976, the reserve covers roughly 4.3 hectares along the margin of the Fensterberge end moraine, a hilly ridge shaped by Pleistocene glaciation. The reserve protects three shallow heath ponds, known in German as Heideweiher, together with the surrounding heathland and woodland. It is almost identical in extent to a corresponding FFH (Flora-Fauna-Habitat) site, embedding the area within the wider European network of habitat protections. Beyond the ponds themselves, the surrounding mosaic of damp mires, dry heaths, and conifer forest gives the reserve a layered character typical of the Pleistocene sand landscapes of northwestern Germany. Because of its compact size, Swatte Poele functions less as a standalone destination and more as a quiet ecological pocket. It absorbs the former natural monument known as Röthekuhle, designated back in 1970, and is managed under the authority of the Osnabrück district with oversight from the Lower Saxony state agency for water management, coastal protection, and nature conservation.
