Wiesenkomplex bei Eisen

Wiesenkomplex bei Eisen is a nature reserve in the northern part of the German state of Saarland, covering approximately 90 hectares across four non-contiguous parcels in the municipalities of Nohfelden and Nonnweiler. It was formally designated on 28 November 2016, replacing two earlier protected sites known as "Wiesen nördlich Eisen" and "Wiesen bei Sötern, Waldbach." The reserve conserves a mosaic of traditionally managed wet and semi-dry grasslands, including mat-grass and small reed grass meadows as well as nutrient-poor lowland hay meadows. Along the Krippbach stream, the protected habitat extends into alder, ash, and willow floodplain gallery forests accompanied by submerged aquatic plant communities in the flowing water. The site's fragmented character, with the largest area adjoining the Bostalsee golf course and additional parcels along the Krippbach, reflects its purpose of safeguarding connected grassland and stream ecosystems that support specialized wildlife such as the great crested newt, the large copper butterfly, and the helmeted damselfly.
