Wolfs- und Wollebachtal Nature Reserve

Wolfs- und Wollebachtal is a small nature reserve in the Rur Eifel, within the municipality of Simmerath in the Städteregion Aachen of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It covers the joined valleys of the Wolfsbach and Wollebach streams, situated between the villages of Steckenborn and Woffelsbach. Despite its compact size, the reserve protects a tightly knit mosaic of near-natural low mountain streams, wet and nutrient-poor grasslands, ash and sycamore ravine forest, oak coppice, and beech stands. The protected area is valued less for its scale than for its ecological quality and structural diversity. In a regional landscape dominated by spruce plantations, the Wolfsbach and Wollebach valleys provide an important refuge for deciduous forest communities and for the flora and fauna associated with undisturbed flowing water. The reserve was formally designated in 1999 and is managed as a habitat and species management area under the regional landscape plan for Simmerath. Its role within the broader network of near-natural Mittelgebirgsbach streams gives the Wolfs- und Wollebachtal area an importance that extends beyond its local footprint, acting as one of the connecting links in a chain of ecologically valuable valley systems across the Rur Eifel.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
