The protected status of Periochi Lympion - Agias Annas developed in stages, mirroring the broader rollout of the Natura 2000 network in Cyprus. In December 2002, the area was declared a Special Protection Area under the framework for bird conservation, establishing it as an important site for avifauna.

Two years later, in May 2004, it was confirmed as a Site of Community Importance, extending its recognition beyond birds to the broader range of habitats and species present. In September 2015, the site was formally upgraded to a Special Area of Conservation, completing the transition from initial designation to a fully integrated conservation unit under EU nature protection law. The three-stage progression illustrates the gradual consolidation of the site's protection regime over more than ten years.

The landscape of Periochi Lympion - Agias Annas reflects the inland Mediterranean character of central Cyprus. The terrain is dominated by lowland terrain supporting shrubby and semi-open vegetation rather than forests, with exposures that favor drought-adapted plant communities.

Arborescent matorral stands of Ziziphus punctuate the area, while broader expanses of thermo-Mediterranean and pre-desert scrub create a mosaic of low trees and woody shrubs. The site's protected species list includes 54 bird species, encompassing larks, pipits, swallows, swifts, warblers, flycatchers, shrikes, wheatears, finches, raptors and nocturnal species such as the long-eared owl and the barn owl.

Notable elements of the list include species of conservation concern such as the European roller, the red-footed falcon, the European honey buzzard, the Eurasian hobby and the great spotted cuckoo. Several wheatears, including the Cyprus wheatear, an endemic or near-endemic species of the island, contribute to the site's regional significance. In addition to the protected bird fauna, the site hosts identified populations of reptiles and a notable plant species, the orchid Ophrys kotschyi, broadening its biodiversity profile beyond birds.

Periochi Lympion - Agias Annas plays a meaningful role in Cyprus's Natura 2000 network, sitting at the intersection of habitat protection and bird conservation.
