Schambachried

Schambachried is a small nature reserve and European Habitats Directive (FFH) site located on the outskirts of the town of Treuchtlingen in Middle Franconia, in the German state of Bavaria. Despite its modest size of only 6.88 hectares, it is regarded as one of the most ecologically valuable protected areas in the region, because it preserves a rare calcareous lowland fen, a habitat type that has become severely depleted across central Europe. The reserve lies in the natural area known as the Treuchtlingen Pforte, where the Schambach valley opens into the broader Altmühl valley along the edge of the Weißenburger Alb limestone plateau. This setting, on the transition between a carbonate-rich valley and a karst plateau, has allowed a distinctive wetland plant community to develop. The site was designated as a nature reserve in 1973, making it the oldest such protected area in Middle Franconia, and it remains an important reference site for fen meadow conservation in Bavaria.
