Torngat Mountains National Park occupies a unique position in Canada's national park system as both an ecological preserve of national significance and a living cultural landscape that honors the deep connection between the Inuit of Labrador and Nunavik and their ancestral lands. The park's creation emerged from the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement, which came into effect on December 1, 2005, establishing the Torngat Mountains National Park Reserve with the intention of creating a full national park. When the Nunavik Inuit Land Claims Agreement took effect on July 10, 2008, the reserve was formally designated as Torngat Mountains National Park, fulfilling a vision of protecting this remarkable landscape while respecting Indigenous rights and knowledge. The park encompasses the full range of the Torngat Mountains, from the coastal fjords along the Labrador Sea to the alpine heights of the interior, and extends to the eastern coastline where features like Grenfell Sound, Eclipse Channel, and Bears Gut mark the transition to the Atlantic. This vast wilderness remains one of the most remote and inaccessible protected areas in eastern North America, accessible primarily by chartered aircraft, cruise ship, or snowmobile, ensuring that its wild character endures despite growing interest in Arctic tourism and exploration.
