Explore mapped protected landscapes and regional park geography across the Guiana Shield

National Parks and Protected Areas in French Guiana

National parks in French Guiana preserve extensive tropical rainforests, coastal wetlands, and island sanctuaries spanning the Guiana Shield. Browsing these protected areas provides essential geographic context for tracking regional conservation zones and forested terrain.

Situated between Suriname and Brazil, French Guiana is both an overseas department and a single territorial collectivity of France. Most settlement lies along the coast and major rivers, while roughly 96% of the territory remains covered by equatorial forest.

French Guiana combines Amazonian geography with French and European institutions, creating a political identity unlike that of its independent South American neighbours. Cayenne is the administrative capital, and the coastal zone also contains Kourou's major space centre. The territory is culturally diverse, with Creole, Indigenous, Maroon, metropolitan French and more recent migrant communities connected by a river-and-road network that remains limited in the forested interior.

French Guiana geography, nature, climate, and landscape context for park-focused travel research

Explore the physical geography, natural setting, and climate patterns of French Guiana through a location-first overview built for travel research, national park discovery, and broader regional context. This section helps explain how landscapes, habitats, and environmental conditions shape what people search for, where they travel, and how they experience protected areas in French Guiana.

French Guiana geography and landscape

The Maroni River forms much of the western boundary with Suriname and the Oyapock marks a long section of the eastern boundary with Brazil. A low Atlantic coastal plain contains the main towns, wetlands and transport corridors, then gives way inland to the old, deeply weathered hills of the Guiana Shield. Rivers are fundamental routes into an interior where continuous roads are scarce and drainage ultimately runs north to the Atlantic.

French Guiana nature and environment

Tropical forest dominates French Guiana and shelters exceptional plant, bird, mammal, reptile and freshwater diversity. Guiana Amazonian Park protects a huge southern expanse, while reserves at Nouragues, La Trinité and Kaw-Roura conserve rainforest, inselbergs and marshes. On the coast, Amana protects internationally important nesting beaches for marine turtles, and Île du Grand Connétable is a major seabird sanctuary.

French Guiana climate and seasonal conditions

The climate is humid and equatorial, with temperatures near 26°C on average and relatively little seasonal temperature change. Rainfall is high but strongly seasonal as the Intertropical Convergence Zone moves across the region: a main wet season generally peaks from spring into early summer, followed by a more pronounced dry season later in the year.
