Cha-Potami

Cha-Potami is a protected natural area in the southwest of Cyprus, designated as a Site of Community Importance under the European Natura 2000 network. The site covers roughly 2,626 hectares along a winding stretch of the Chapotami river, extending about 12.5 kilometers through steep, often narrow valleys where the watercourse carves through the landscape. Most of the territory lies within the Paphos district, with a smaller portion falling in the Limassol district, marking a transition zone between the two administrative regions of the island. Ecologically, the protected area combines riverine gallery forests of Oriental plane and oleander with hillside woodlands of olive and carob, together with Mediterranean cypress groves in the gorges and endemic-rich scrub and grassland habitats. The site is notable for its high number of Cypriot endemics and for bird species including the Cyprus Scops Owl, the Cyprus Wheatear, and the globally threatened Black Francolin. Because of this combination of habitats and species, Cha-Potami is one of the more important river-based conservation sites in Cyprus.
