Djiru National Park

Djiru National Park is a protected area located in the Cassowary Coast Region of Queensland, Australia, approximately 8 kilometres west of the coastal town of Mission Beach. The park covers an area of 41.4 square kilometres and forms part of the globally significant Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area. Established in December 2005 originally under the name Tam O'Shanter National Park, the area was renamed Djiru National Park in December 2009. The park encompasses a diverse landscape of coastal lowland forests, wetlands, and palm-dominated vegetation communities that support several threatened species. It is particularly notable for its population of the southern cassowary, a large flightless bird species that remains endangered and serves as an ecological icon for the region. The park was formerly a state forest before gaining national park protection status, reflecting its ecological importance within Australia's tropical northeast.
