Elmendorfer Holz

Elmendorfer Holz is a small protected forest in the municipality of Bad Zwischenahn, in the Ammerland district of Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany. Covering roughly 28 hectares of lowland woodland just north of the Zwischenahner Meer, it represents one of the more intact stands of semi-natural mixed deciduous forest in a region otherwise dominated by farmland, heath, and dispersed settlement. The woodland is formally protected as a landscape protection area and most of its area is classified as an EU Habitat Directive (FFH) site. It is valued less for dramatic scenery than for its ecological character, with old oaks, a varied herb layer, and transitions between several distinct forest community types occurring on a very compact footprint. Its proximity to the Zwischenahner Meer, one of the larger inland lakes in the region and a notable tourism anchor, gives the forest an important role as a low-impact recreational complement to the lakeside visitor experience of the Ammerland area.
