Feuchtgebiete um Bad Schussenried

Feuchtgebiete um Bad Schussenried is a designated European Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) site in southeastern Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Spread across seven separate sub-areas, it encompasses roughly 610 hectares of lowland fens, raised bogs, nutrient-rich ponds and lakes, alder and beech forests, and species-rich mires in the landscape surrounding the small town of Bad Schussenried. The site lies within the Upper Swabian hill country (Oberschwäbisches Hügelland), a region characterised by glacial relicts, kettle holes, and shallow lake basins. Its seven component areas straddle the districts of Biberach and Ravensburg, extending from Bad Schussenried itself to nearby Aulendorf and Bad Waldsee. Designated under the EU Habitats Directive and formally protected in 2019, the area is valued above all for its complex mosaic of wetland habitats, including calcareous fens, floating bog mats, reedbeds, sedge stands, and remnants of floodplain woodland. It shelters several strictly protected species of EU interest and forms part of a broader network of wetland reserves that characterise Upper Swabia.
