Frankland Group National Park

Frankland Group National Park encompasses a chain of five continental islands lying approximately 45 kilometers southeast of Cairns along the Queensland coast of Australia. These islands, known as High Island, Normanby Island, Mabel Island, Round Island, and Russell Island, represent a rare example of exposed continental islands in the Great Barrier Reef region. The park covers 77 hectares and was officially established in 1994 under the management of the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. These islands hold deep cultural significance as the traditional Country of the Mandingalbay Yidinji and Gungandji Aboriginal peoples, whose connections to these landscapes extend back thousands of years. The island group was first charted by European explorers during James Cook's 1770 voyage, when Cook named the islands after Admiral Sir Thomas Frankland.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
