The Lorze – Sihl Glacial Landscape with the Höhronen chain and the Schwantenau bog is one of the most comprehensive glacially shaped landscapes of national significance in Switzerland. Registered as BLN object 1307, it extends across parts of the cantons of Zug, Zürich and Schwyz, clustered around the valley systems of the Lorze, which drains part of the Ägerisee basin, and the Sihl, which crosses all three cantons on its way north. The landscape combines the forested ridges of the Pre-Alps with a richly sculpted foothill terrain on the edge of the Mittelland.

Its identity is shaped above all by glaciation. During the ice ages, the Reuss glacier from the Gotthard and Lake Lucerne region and the Rhine-Linth glacier flowing eastward out of what is now the Zürichsee basin converged here, while a smaller local Sihl glacier occupied the upper Sihl valley. Their deposits form an unusually clear assemblage of moraine ridges, drumlins, ground moraine, kettle hollows and small lake basins. The moraines of the Linth glacier created the elongated Hirzel–Höhi–Chapf ridge, while the drumlin-rich Menzingen plateau, including the Laubegg hill near Hütten, displays the area's classic streamlined glacial forms.

The present river network itself is a direct legacy of these deposits. The Sihl, which once flowed toward Lake Zürich near Schindellegi and earlier reached Lake Zug near Sihlbrugg, was diverted by aggrading glacial sediments onto a long outer detour along the southern moraine. Its current course runs roughly forty kilometres north through the Sihl valley to join the Limmat in Zürich. The Lorze, by contrast, drains into the Ägerisee and on toward the Reuss. Together, these river corridors define the hydrological backbone of the protected landscape and support distinct riparian and gorge habitats.

The modern landscape blends nature and culture. Extensive coniferous and mixed forests still dominate the steep slopes of the Höhronen and the Zimmerberg, while the gentler plateau around Menzingen has long been cleared and is now a mosaic of farmland, villages and small settlements. Major historic and modern transport routes cross the area, including the roads and rail lines through Sihlbrugg, Biberbrugg and Schindellegi, the crossing of the Hirzel pass north of the area, and the mountain passes of Gottschalkenberg and Raten. Here, the surface is dominated by elongated moraine ridges, including the Hirzel–Höhi–Chapf ridge built from medial moraine of the Linth glacier, by rounded drumlin hills such as the Laubegg near Hütten, by ground moraine plateaus and by numerous small depressions. The Schwantenau, lying on a high plateau between the Sihl, the Alp and the Sihlsee, contains the third-largest raised bog biotope in Switzerland and the largest peatland area within the protected landscape.

The hydrological landscape is equally distinctive. The Sihl cuts through a deep, narrow, often gorge-like valley, with the Sihlsprung rapids near the cantonal boundary as a dramatic feature. The Lorze and its tributaries have carved the Lorzetobel, where the historic Lorzentobel bridges cross on the main road from Zug to Sattel. In the depressions between moraine walls and in former dead-ice holes, small lakes such as the Hüttnersee near Samstagern and the Wilersee near Menzingen were formed; many other hollows silted up to form peat bogs and wet meadows. South of the Höhronen, the Biber and Alp rivers shape additional valleys, while the Hüttnersee and the Teufenbachweiher reservoir add still-water elements to the scenery.

The peatlands are a defining ecological element. In the Menzingen moraine belt, around the Raten pass and in the eastern Schwantenau, mires shelter specialized vegetation such as the rare pine-birch swamp forest, accompanied by relict subalpine plants on the Gottschalkenberg, where original pine woodland was once cleared for peat cutting. The Schwantenau fens contain large stands of small-sedge sedge marsh, tall-herb fen, and purple moor-grass meadow, surrounded by widespread black alder and birch woodland. The Hinterbergried near Schönenberg is itself a nationally inventoried flat bog, and the Abschwändi raised bog on the Gottschalkenberg preserves a rare example of an intact subalpine bog community.

The forest landscape around the Höhronen and Zimmerberg is dominated by spruce-fir-beech and silver fir-Norway spruce mixed forests, with silver fir-Norway spruce stands on the very humid north face of the Höhronen. These forests have been used for timber since the Middle Ages, and the Gutschwald forest nature reserve is an important protected woodland area. Old gravel pits and disused extraction sites in the moraine belt near Neuheim and Menzingen have been recolonized by pioneer plants and now serve as nationally significant amphibian spawning grounds, including the «Dreiwässeren» floodplain near Schindellegi.
