Gulf of Carpentaria Marine Park

The Gulf of Carpentaria Marine Park is an Australian marine park that protects tropical waters in the southern part of the Gulf of Carpentaria, an inlet of the Arafura Sea in northern Australia. It lies offshore of Queensland, north of Mornington Island, and encompasses roughly 23,771 square kilometers of shallow sea, coastal zones, basin environments, and submerged reef systems. The park is managed as part of the North Marine Parks Network and contains examples of the Northern Shelf Province, including the Carpentaria, Karumba-Nassau, and Wellesley meso-scale bioregions. Within its boundaries are coastal waters known for high productivity and aggregations of marine life, deeper basin waters, plateau and saddle habitats northwest of the Wellesley Islands, and submerged coral reefs of the Gulf. The park is notable for the combination of ecological roles it supports: internesting habitat for threatened sea turtles, foraging grounds for migratory seabirds, and unusually high concentrations of marine biodiversity and endemism across a range of tropical marine environments. It was proclaimed in 2013 and its management plan took effect on 1 July 2018.
