Kachina Peaks Wilderness

Kachina Peaks Wilderness is a protected wilderness area within the Coconino National Forest in north-central Arizona, lying just north of Flagstaff. It covers the upper elevations of the San Francisco Peaks, including Humphreys Peak, which at 12,643 feet is the highest point in Arizona. The wilderness is part of an ancient composite volcano whose eruption built and then collapsed the surrounding caldera, leaving a dramatic inner basin ringed by some of the most prominent summits in the state. Within its roughly 18,600 acres, the area preserves Arizona's only true Arctic-Alpine vegetation zone, including a threatened plant found nowhere else on Earth. The peaks are deeply significant to several Indigenous peoples of the Southwest. According to Hopi tradition, kachina spirits dwell on the summits during part of the year, and the area contains shrines that remain in active religious use, giving the wilderness a layered identity as both a natural landmark and a sacred landscape.
