Kampinos National Park

Kampinos National Park protects a large remnant of the historic Masovian Forest on the glacial Vistula pradolina (ice-marginal valley) just northwest of Warsaw, in central Poland. It is defined by an unusual juxtaposition of inland sand dunes and extensive wetlands, an ecological contrast that supports rich plant and animal life across a relatively flat lowland landscape. The park was established in 1959 to safeguard the Kampinos Forest from centuries of agricultural encroachment, and over the late twentieth century much of the former farmland within its boundaries has been gradually reforested. In 2000 it became part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and it has also been recognized at the European level as an important bird area, underlining the value of its forests, dunes, and marshes for biodiversity and conservation. The site is part of a broader protected landscape that includes the unregulated Vistula river corridor with its oxbows, sandbars, and riparian thickets. Together, these habitats make Kampinos an unusually nature-rich green space close to a major European capital and a focal area for forest, dune, and wetland conservation in Poland.
