Koffituten

Koffituten is a small protected nature reserve in the Tecklenburger Land region of North Rhine-Westphalia, in northwestern Germany. Covering roughly 23.55 hectares near the village of Schale in the municipality of Hopsten, it preserves one of the last living raised bogs in the Steinfurt district. The reserve combines a tiny but ecologically significant Hochmoor core with surrounding inland dune, fen woodland, pine-oak forest, and grassland habitats. The bog itself originated about five thousand to five and a half thousand years ago through the silting up of a shallow body of water, and peat has accumulated to a thickness of roughly two meters. After mid-twentieth-century drainage efforts degraded the bog and let birch and pine colonize its surface, parts of the area were placed under nature protection in 1991. Careful removal of invading trees and the blocking of drainage ditches have since helped restore active raised bog vegetation, making the site an example of successful small-scale bog regeneration in the German lowlands. The reserve is also designated under the European Union Habitats Directive as part of the Natura 2000 network, reflecting its importance for threatened bog species. It is embedded in the local Schaler Naturerlebnisweg, allowing visitors to explore the interplay of bog, inland dunes, and adjacent meadows that defines this distinctive corner of the Münsterland landscape.
