Kreideberg bei Ellerode

Kreideberg bei Ellerode ist ein Naturschutzgebiet im Werra-Meißner-Kreis im Norden Hessens, unmittelbar an der Landesgrenze zu Niedersachsen. Die Stadt Witzenhausen ist die zuständige Gebietskörperschaft; das Schutzgebiet liegt in der Gemarkung Berlepsch-Ellerode zwischen dem niedersächsischen Ort Atzenhausen und der südlich vorbeiführenden Bundesautobahn 7. Mit rund 57 Hektar Fläche ist es ein kompaktes, aber strukturell vielfältiges Waldreservat, das zugleich als gleichgroßes Natura-2000-Gebiet (Nr. 4524-303) ausgewiesen ist und damit sowohl deutsches Naturschutzrecht als auch europäisches Habitatschutzrecht erfüllt. Der Kern des Schutzgebiets besteht aus einem naturnahen, reich strukturierten Kalk-Buchenwald mit einem hohen Anteil alter Baumbestände. Waldmeister-Buchenwald und Orchideen-Buchenwald prägen das Bild; am Rand liegen kleine orchideenreiche Halbtrockenrasen, die in Streuobstwiesen und landwirtschaftliche Flächen übergehen. Ein gut erhaltener Kalkquellsumpf ergänzt die Standortvielfalt und beherbergt mit Davalls Segge eine Art an der Nordgrenze ihrer Verbreitung. Die Kombination aus kalkgeprägter Geologie, alten Laubwaldbeständen und kleinflächigen Offenlandbiotopen verleiht dem Gebiet über die regionale Naturschutzbedeutung hinaus auch einen überregionalen botanischen Wert. Das Reservat ist überwiegend in Privatbesitz; die forstliche Betreuung liegt beim Forstamt Hessisch Lichtenau, die naturschutzfachliche Steuerung bei der Oberen Naturschutzbehörde des Regierungspräsidiums Kassel.
