Kuhgrabensee

Kuhgrabensee is a lake and nature reserve situated in the far southeast of the Blockland district of Bremen, in northwestern Germany. The lake was excavated between 1970 and 1972 as part of construction work for the Bundesautobahn 27, and it has since been transformed from a working quarrying pit into a protected area. Since July 1987, the lake together with its surrounding shoreline has been formally designated as a 29.6 hectare nature reserve, making it one of the notable smaller protected areas within the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. Ecologically, the lake is unusually interesting for an inland Bremen waterbody because it is fed by groundwater and shows a measurable influence from the nearby Lilienthal salt dome, giving the water a higher salinity than typical freshwater lakes in the region. Its water quality is classified as mesotrophic. These chemical and trophic conditions, combined with the shallow shore zones that were expanded in the late 1990s, support an unusual assemblage of aquatic plants, dragonflies, and amphibians, while the open water and reed fringes make the lake attractive for breeding waterbirds. The lake is also recognized at the European level. It is registered as an EU Bird Protection Area (europäisches Vogelschutzgebiet), reflecting its importance for nesting, resting, and feeding birds. Today Kuhgrabensee is valued less as a swimming destination and more as a quiet local site for birding, ecological study, and nature observation, accessible from paths along the Kuhgraben and the Mittelweg and from a small observation hut on its shore.
