Little Missouri National Grassland

Little Missouri National Grassland is the largest of the United States National Grasslands, covering more than a million acres across western North Dakota. It sits in a transitional zone where the Great Plains meet the rugged badlands carved by the Little Missouri River, and its dominant scenery is a colorful, eroded landscape of buttes, canyons, and rolling mixed-grass prairie. The grassland is managed by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Dakota Prairie Grasslands and contains scattered tracts of state, federal, and private land, much of it leased for cattle grazing. Theodore Roosevelt National Park lies enclaved within its boundaries and is managed separately by the National Park Service, creating a closely linked pair of protected landscapes in the same region. Beyond its ecological value, the area is shaped by ongoing energy development, with oil and gas exploration and extraction scattered across the landscape. These activities sit alongside the grassland's conservation role, wildlife habitat, and ranching heritage, giving it a working-landscape character that distinguishes it from purely wilderness-oriented reserves.
