Milčice Natural Monument

Milčice Natural Monument is a very small protected area in the lowlands of the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, situated west of the village of Milčice in the Nymburk district. It covers just over four hectares of flat terrain along the Milčický potok (Milčice stream), where mineral-rich groundwater emerges at the surface and feeds shallow, periodically flooded depressions. The site is valued primarily for its tufa-forming meadow springs, known in Czech as pěnovcová luční prameniště. These springs discharge strongly calcareous, highly mineralized water rich in calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonates, creating conditions that support specialized spring and fen vegetation unusual for this part of Bohemia. Because of this distinctive habitat, the area is also recognized as a European Site of Community Importance within the Natura 2000 network. Although it is not a dramatic landscape, Milčice is a regionally important example of a surviving calcareous spring complex in an otherwise intensively farmed agricultural setting.
