Natura 2000 Area No. 39 stretches across central Jutland from the villages of Daugbjerg and Mønsted in the south, running northward along the valleys of the Mønsted Å and Jordbro Å as far as the Liebes and Dalgas Plantations near Stoholm. Within this relatively compact footprint lies an unusually layered landscape of cultural and natural value, in which centuries of human exploitation of limestone have shaped part of the geology while the surrounding river valleys and dry uplands have retained a mosaic of semi-natural habitats.

The two chalk mines are the heart of the site's identity. Mønsted Kalkgruber and Daugbjerg Kalkgruber were worked for centuries, initially to provide lime for Danish churches and later for broader construction; the Mønsted mine continued extracting chalk until 1978. Today this deep underground network is a hibernation refuge of international significance for bats, hosting colonies of pond bats and other species that depend on its cool, stable conditions through the winter.
