Naracoorte Caves National Park

Naracoorte Caves National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, renowned for its exceptional fossil record spanning over one million years. The park protects a network of limestone caves containing one of the richest and most significant collections of Australian megafauna fossils in the world. Formed from coral and marine creatures that lived 200 million years ago, with additional limestone deposition 20 million years ago, the cave system contains spectacular stalactites and stalagmites alongside extraordinary fossil deposits. The park was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1994 as part of the Australian Fossil Mammal Sites, recognized for preserving irreplaceable evidence of Australia's prehistoric fauna including the marsupial lion, giant diprotodon, and thylacine ancestors. Out of 28 known caves within the park, only four are accessible to the public while the remainder remain protected for ongoing scientific research.
