A lowland river valley habitat area in central Jutland shaped by glacial meltwater

Natura 2000 Site No. 68 Skjern Å

Natura 2000 Site No. 68 Skjern Å is a designated Danish habitat area covering roughly 2,580 hectares in central Jutland, with about two thirds of the land owned by the state. The site encompasses the lower reaches of Skjern Å, Denmark's most water-rich river, along with a stretch of its tributary Vorgod Å and extends upstream from the outlet into Ringkøbing Fjord toward Arnborg. The area sits within a broad glacial meltwater valley about eight kilometers wide that was carved after the last ice age. It protects a mosaic of lakes, streams, heaths, meadows, raised bogs, and alluvial forests, and has been designated to safeguard the wild Atlantic salmon population that has lived in Skjern Å since the glacial period, together with otter and the green snaketail dragonfly. Ecologically the area is notable for housing the nationally rare and globally threatened aquatic plant water crowfoot, and for combining freshwater, wetland, heath, and forest habitats in a single connected corridor. The site straddles Ringkøbing-Skjern and Herning municipalities and is managed in coordination with the Ringkøbing Fjord water plan.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
