Naturschutzgebiet Schakenberg

Naturschutzgebiet Schakenberg is a small protected beech forest reserve of around 2.2 hectares, situated west of Oelinghausen within the city area of Arnsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The reserve protects a mature stand of European beech (Rotbuche) growing on the characteristic limestone hilltop of the Schakenberg, a geologically distinct Kuppe that rises roughly 30 to 60 meters above the surrounding Bieberbach valley and the broader landscape of the Hachener Kuppenland. The forest is classified as a near-natural Waldmeister-Buchenwald, a woodland type associated with calcareous substrates and rich in characteristic geophytes. Within the protected area lies an abandoned limestone quarry, a remnant of the area's former extractive land use that now forms part of the mosaic of woodland and outcrop habitats. Ecologically, the reserve is significant because its geologically determined beech forest community is regionally rare. The site is integrated into the larger Luerwald and Bieberbach Natura 2000 complex, contributing to both a 2,633-hectare Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) site and a 2,637-hectare Bird Protection Area (SPA), and it serves as a durable refuge for old-growth beech woodland features and associated species.
