Obersuhler Aue

Obersuhler Aue is a large, open floodplain meadow landscape in northeastern Hesse, located southeast of the village of Obersuhl in the municipality of Wildeck, Landkreis Hersfeld-Rotenburg. The protected area sits at around 200 to 210 meters above sea level where the Werra valley opens into a broad, flat basin that borders Thuringia on three sides. The habitat is dominated by species-rich meadows, including both dry oat-grass meadows and moist sedge-rich wet meadows, interspersed with abandoned gravel-pit ponds, reedbeds, and scrub mosaics. Because these open, unimproved grasslands have been maintained through traditional grazing and late mowing rather than intensive agriculture, Obersuhler Aue has become one of the most important meadow bird and amphibian refuges in northern Hesse. The area was declared a nature reserve in 1990 and was subsequently integrated into the European Natura 2000 network as both a Fauna-Flora-Habitat site and a component of the EU Birds Directive site "Rhäden von Obersuhl und Auen an der mittleren Werra." In 2023, the meadow complex also became part of the national natural monument "Grünes Band Hessen," strengthening its long-term role as a corridor of biodiversity along the former inner-German border.
