A Black Forest landscape protection area preserving centuries-old selection and group-selection forestry traditions near Loßburg.

Plenter und Femelwälder

The Plenter und Femelwälder is a designated landscape protection area in the central Black Forest of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It lies west of the town of Loßburg in the Landkreis Freudenstadt, stretching across the municipal areas of Loßburg and Schömberg toward the Kleine Kinzig reservoir and the upper Kinzig valley. The protection area encompasses five separate sub-areas set within two distinct natural regions of the Black Forest: the Grindenschwarzwald and Enzhöhen in the north and the Mittlerer Schwarzwald further south. Its defining character comes from the way the forests around Loßburg and Schömberg have been managed for centuries. Rather than being harvested in large clear-cuts, the woodlands were traditionally tended using two close-to-nature methods: Plenterwald, a form of continuous selection forest, and Femelwald, a form of group selection forest. These historical practices produced multi-aged, structurally diverse stands that today look strikingly natural and have become the very quality that the protection area was created to safeguard. Designated as a protected landscape in 1939 under the Reich Nature Conservation Act, the area forms part of a wider network of Landschaftsschutzgebiete around Freudenstadt. It borders the Ödenwald and Ehlenbogener Tal protection areas, contributing to a broader conservation corridor in the northern and central Black Forest.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
