Park earthquake history

A curated dataset of regional seismic records mapped by proximity to protected park landscapes

Recorded Historical Earthquake Activity Associated with the Reichenbacher Kalkberge Nature Reserve

This historical catalogue provides a detailed view of recorded seismic events identified by their epicentre distance from the Reichenbacher Kalkberge in the Werra-Meißner-Kreis. The collection aggregates objective seismic data points to offer a clear overview of regional earthquake occurrences without assessing ground-level hazards or structural risks. Each entry includes standardized metadata to help observers trace long-term seismic patterns within this part of the Hessian low-mountain range.

Reichenbacher Kalkberge

The Reichenbacher Kalkberge are a protected area of varied landscape and vegetation in the Werra-Meißner-Kreis of northern Hesse, Germany. They sit on Muschelkalk limestone in the foothills north of the Stölzinger Gebirge and belong to the Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land. The area combines steep, mostly forested slopes with sun-exposed semi-dry grasslands, meadows, spring mires, and a small former brown-coal mining lake, producing a mosaic of habitats unusually rich for the region. The reserve's identity is shaped by near-natural calcareous beech forest (Kalkbuchenwald), orchid-rich limestone grassland (Kalkmagerrasen), and flower-rich lowland hay meadows that trace back to centuries of grazing and traditional forest use. Their ecological value led to designation as a Naturschutzgebiet in 1996 and as a Natura 2000 site under the EU Habitats Directive in 2008, with a dedicated Naturwaldreservat around the medieval Burg Reichenbach at its core. The reserve is also a popular low-mountain walking area crossed by several long-distance trails.
