Reserva Ecológica Mache-Chindul

Reserva Ecológica Mache-Chindul is a large state-protected ecological reserve in northwestern Ecuador, spanning parts of Esmeraldas province and northern Manabí. It covers more than 119,000 hectares of the coastal mountains that form the northern extension of the Cordillera de la Costa, including the upper basin of the Bilsa River and areas close to the Pacific shoreline. The reserve protects a significant remnant of very humid tropical mature forest along Ecuador's coast, along with secondary forests and regenerating areas. Although physically separated from the Andes, it shares some ecological affinities with distant Andean cloud forests while also hosting species endemic to the Chocó biogeographic region. Its combination of Chocó endemism, Andean-affiliated cloud forest species, and rare large mammals makes it one of the most ecologically important protected areas on Ecuador's Pacific coast.
