Manglares Cayapas-Mataje Ecological Reserve

The Manglares Cayapas-Mataje Ecological Reserve is a large protected mangrove and wetland complex on the northwestern coast of Ecuador, in the Esmeraldas province near the Colombian border. It encompasses more than 49,000 hectares of mangrove forests, tidal estuaries, floodable forests known locally as guandales, freshwater lagoons, and tropical lowland rainforest, forming the largest and best-conserved estuarine system on the South Pacific coast. The reserve protects the lower basins of the Cayapas and Mataje rivers where they meet the Pacific Ocean, blending marine, brackish, and freshwater habitats. Designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2003, it is recognized for its high biological richness, its strong connection to the Chocó biogeographic region, and the presence of Afro-Esmeraldeño communities who have historically lived within and around the mangrove landscape. Ecologically, the reserve is significant for its mangrove productivity, unique Chocó endemism, and role as habitat for threatened species ranging from the American crocodile to the jaguar and bottlenose dolphin. It represents one of the most important coastal conservation areas in Ecuador and a key stronghold of the country's mangrove heritage.
