The reserve's riverbed and side channels host an exceptionally rich fish fauna, with about forty species, including migratory species of high conservation interest such as Atlantic salmon, allis shad, and sea lamprey.

Reptiles and amphibians add another layer, with twelve amphibian species recorded. Invertebrate diversity is also remarkable. The reserve is home to 49 dragonfly species, including protected species such as the Mercury bluet and the green snaketail, and to more than 1,000 beetle species, making the lower trophic levels of this alluvial ecosystem unusually rich and providing the abundance of insects that supports much of the bird and bat life above.
