Regional Nature Reserve of the Carrière des Nerviens

The Regional Nature Reserve of the Carrière des Nerviens is a small but ecologically rich protected area in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France, spanning the communes of Bavay and Saint-Waast in the Nord department. Covering roughly three hectares, it preserves a former Famennian sandstone quarry that was infilled with calcareous marls in the 1970s and then recolonized by spontaneous vegetation, creating a mosaic of open herbaceous patches, shrubby zones, and pioneer woodland. The reserve is known for hosting fifteen plants of regional heritage interest, including several species protected in Nord-Pas-de-Calais, and three plant formations listed under the European Habitats Directive. Its botanical diversity is shaped by calcium-rich soils and a transitional climate that blends oceanic and continental influences, bringing together species typical of both bioclimatic zones at the limits of their ranges. Managed since 2009 by the CPIE Bocage de l'Avesnois, the reserve combines conservation of an uncommon habitat mosaic, regular work against invasive plants and woodland encroachment, environmental education, and ongoing flora and fauna monitoring, making it a compact yet scientifically meaningful natural site.
