Rio Pongo

Rio Pongo is a tidal river and estuary system in western Guinea, flowing from the inland Fouta Djallon highlands down to the Atlantic Ocean near the town of Boffa. Its lower reaches form a broad estuarine landscape dominated by mangrove forest, intertidal mudflats, and brackish tidal channels that together create one of the most ecologically important coastal wetland complexes in the country. The estuary has been recognized internationally for its ecological value. It has been designated as a Ramsar wetland site, reflecting its global importance as a coastal habitat, and it has also been identified as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International for the waterbird populations it supports. African manatees are present in the river and its tidal channels. Beyond its natural character, Rio Pongo carries deep historical resonance. The surrounding region became closely associated with the transatlantic slave trade, and the river became a focal point of nineteenth-century British anti-slaving patrols along the West African coast. The river has also entered literary and cinematic memory through the historical novel Anthony Adverse, much of which is set along its banks.
