Rock Islands

The Rock Islands are a collection of several hundred small limestone and coral islands scattered across the Southern Lagoon of Palau, between the state of Koror and the island of Peleliu. Together they form one of the most visually distinctive archipelagos in the Pacific, famous for their beaches, bright blue lagoons, and the peculiar umbrella-like silhouettes of many of the islands themselves. Geologically, the islands are reef-derived uprises that have been slowly modeled by marine erosion, sponges, mollusks, and grazing sea creatures into mushroom-shaped landforms with a narrow base at the intertidal notch. With between roughly 250 and 300 islands in the group, the Rock Islands host an exceptionally rich marine ecosystem, a wealth of Palau's endemic birdlife, and globally unique features such as the famous Jellyfish Lake, which holds entire populations of stingless jellyfish found nowhere else on Earth. The site's combined cultural and natural value was recognized in 2012 when Rock Islands Southern Lagoon was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, placing Palau among the most important marine and island protected areas in Micronesia.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
