Liechtenstein's only Ramsar wetland, where ancient peat meadows shelter migratory birds in the Alpine Rhine valley.

Ruggeller Riet

Ruggeller Riet is a national nature reserve in the northernmost municipality of Liechtenstein, Ruggell, lying in the valley of the Alpine Rhine close to the country's tripoint with Austria and Switzerland. The reserve protects around 88 hectares of wet meadows and moorland developed on a thick layer of peat in a former glacial basin. Designated as a national nature reserve in 1978 and recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 1991, it is Liechtenstein's only site on the Ramsar list. The landscape combines low-elevation peat meadows, bog vegetation, and open wetland, set against the broad valley floor of the Alpine Rhine. This combination of habitat, elevation, and geographic position gives the reserve an outsized ecological importance for a country better known for its alpine terrain, providing breeding and stopover habitat for a range of birds recognized by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area. Ruggeller Riet is notable as a living reminder of the post-glacial history of the Rhine valley. The wetlands originated in shallow lakes left behind by the retreating Rhine Glacier roughly 16,500 years ago and have since been shaped by centuries of low-intensity pasture and hay-making, making the reserve as much a cultural as an ecological landmark.
