Samar Island Natural Park

Samar Island Natural Park is the largest terrestrial protected area in the Philippines. It spans the rugged central mountain range of Samar Island in the Eastern Visayas, forming a continuous belt of old-growth forest across three provinces: Northern Samar, Samar, and Eastern Samar. With a core area of more than 333,000 hectares, the park anchors a buffer zone that reaches almost a third of the entire island. The park protects an exceptionally biodiverse landscape that ranges from lowland mixed dipterocarp forests to mossy and cloud forests at higher elevations, surrounded by dramatic limestone and karst terrain. Several earlier protected sites have been folded into its boundaries, including the Sohoton Natural Bridge Park, the Calbiga Caves, the Taft Forest Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Jicontol and Bulosao watershed reserves. Together these landscapes give the park strong recognition as a center of plant and animal endemism in the Philippines. Samar Island Natural Park is most famous for harboring the critically endangered Philippine eagle, along with other endemic wildlife of the Eastern Visayas and Mindanao biogeographic region. It plays a central role in watershed protection, supporting the headwaters of numerous major rivers on the island and sustaining both rural communities and downstream ecosystems.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
