Sequoia National Park

Sequoia National Park is a protected area in the southern Sierra Nevada mountain range of California, established in 1890 as the second national park in the United States. The park encompasses over 404,000 acres of mountainous terrain featuring dramatic elevation changes of nearly 13,000 feet, ranging from the foothills at Ash Mountain to Mount Whitney, the highest summit in the contiguous United States at 14,505 feet above sea level. The park is contiguous with Kings Canyon National Park to the north, and both are administered together by the National Park Service as a unified management area. The region was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1976, recognizing its ecological significance and role in preserving unique Sierra Nevada ecosystems. The park is world-renowned for its extraordinary giant sequoia forests, which contain the largest trees on Earth by volume. The General Sherman Tree, located in the Giant Forest, stands as the largest known living tree in the world, measuring approximately 275 feet tall and 36 feet in diameter at its base. The Giant Forest contains five of the ten largest giant sequoias on the planet, creating an otherworldly landscape of massive, ancient trees that have stood for thousands of years. These old-growth forests span approximately 202,000 acres shared between Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, representing one of the most significant contiguous stands of giant sequoia remaining on Earth. Beyond its famous sequoias, the park protects a remarkable diversity of ecosystems spanning multiple climate zones, from Mediterranean foothill chaparral through montane conifer forests to alpine tundra. The landscape features dramatic granite peaks, deep canyons carved by ancient glaciers, pristine waterfalls, and over 270 known caves including Crystal Cave. The area holds deep cultural significance, having been home to the Monache (Western Mono) people for centuries before Euro-American settlement, with evidence of Native American presence dating back to AD 1000.
