Übergangsmoor im Kropper Forst

The FFH-Gebiet Übergangsmoor im Kropper Forst is a small Natura 2000 protected area in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein. It lies within the Kreis Schleswig-Flensburg, inside the municipality of Kropp, and is embedded in the broader forest landscape known as the Gehege Kropp. With a total area of only about 18 hectares, the site is shaped by a pine forest surrounding a central treeless depression that contains a transitional mire, an ecological stage between lowland fen and raised bog. The protected area has been designated under the European Habitats Directive (FFH) for two main habitat types: dry heaths and transitional mires with quaking bogs. Its transitional mire is the site's defining conservation feature, even though its overall conservation status has been rated only moderately favorable. The landscape is remarkably flat, sitting only a few meters above sea level, and the site is difficult to access, with no formal visitor infrastructure on the ground. Beyond its ecological importance, the area is a good example of how human land-use history left its mark. The forest itself was not an ancient woodland but was planted by the Prussian forest administration in the 1870s, converting former heathland south of Kropp into the coniferous woodland now framing the mire. Today the site illustrates the challenges of maintaining mire hydrology in a landscape shaped by drainage, river channel lowering, and the closure of the Eider tidal estuary by the Eidersperrwerk in 1973.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
